About This Project

This project includes the restoration of four listed buildings in the small village of Anakasia at the outskirts of Volos city, designated as buildings of special architectural interest (memorial) by the Ministry of Culture. They originally constructed during the period of 1880s. The project includes the construction of one new and all of them will be incorporated into a traditional guesthouse with auxiliary spaces. The architecture details of the main house is the guiding concept that reflects every new idea and decision making in the rest buildings.

The manufacturing process of the main house consists of old masonry stones with irregular thickness and mortar porcelain, in fair condition (requires special aid) as a carrier body. The old stonework that is the strongest architectural feature of the house, marks the outer building of the road and from the lower parts of the road circuit, due to the dominant position that makes it so visible.

The dynamic aspect of it, is also enhanced by the subsequent architectural decorative elements as marble ‘cantilevers’ and the impressive railings of the two balconies. Also, the wooden doorways of the house (some with metal locking bracket), offer an insight into traditional architecture and construction.

The other three buildings were ancillary buildings of the main house as washing areas, a large traditional oven, storage areas, an old pigeon house and a stall. These buildings were reinforced and converted into ancillary areas of the main guesthouse such as dining rooms, reading rooms, storage rooms and exhibition areas of traditional old objects that were found in the buildings (traditional cisterns and crockery of Pelion area, pictures of the past and traditional wooden furniture).

Internally the layout of spaces at the main building with symmetry axis the airy hall with the big staircase, the special decorative ceilings and walls processing and the large amount of spaces are the main features of the interior of a traditional mansion of Pelion.
