About This Project

This particular project involves the restoration of an old stone two-storey residence located in the outskirts of Kato-Gatzea, South Pelion. The property was built before 1955 and, as such, the use of traditional techniques and materials sourced in the Pelion region was evident. Restoration work carried out fully respected the history of the building and care was taken to restore the original form as well as retain traditional features. Restoration work included the reconstruction of the main structure and the building of exterior walls reusing existing stone; with the addition of new locally sourced stones in neutral shades. The reconstruction of the roof was performed with an innovative technique that is characterized by the absence of central columns. The materials and the form of frames and railings was in line with those required by the regulations of the area. The interior design was more casual with an open plan view; free of dividing walls on the lower level and an open gallery shaping the first floor level. The bare stone-walls in the interior of the house provide traditional character indoors. The modern furnishings were not included in the original design but were incorporated to match perfectly with the traditional elements.
